IT Asset Management (ITAM) is een discipline gericht op het beheren, beheersen en optimaliseren van de selectie, aanschaf, inzet, onderhoud, gebruik en buitengebruikstelling van computerhardware, software en clouddiensten binnen een organisatie. De doelstellingen van ITAM zijn onder meer de verlaging van de kosten van informatietechnologie (IT) en de risico's die verbonden zijn aan het eigendom en het gebruik van IT, terwijl de responsiviteit, het gebruik, de beveiliging en de productiviteit van de eindgebruikers worden gemaximaliseerd.<\/p>

Bijzonder belangrijk voor grote ondernemingen is dat ITAM het beheer van licenties en juridische risico's verbonden aan het gebruik van (cloud)software mogelijk maakt via de ITAM-subdiscipline Software Asset Management (SAM). De internationale ISO\/IEC 19770-familie van normen omvat een procesraamwerk waarmee een organisatie ITAM-processen en -beleid kan opnemen om te voldoen aan de vereisten van corporate governance en om effectieve ondersteuning voor IT-servicebeheer in het algemeen te garanderen.<\/p>
